Yorkiepoo Origins

yorkiepoo.gifYorkiepoos are among some of the more popular breeds in the "designer dog" trend. The "designer dog" trend is a term used to describe the practice of breeding two species of dogs in order to try to get an offspring that has inherited as many positive traits from its parents as possible.

The first half of the Yorkiepoos' parentage, the Poodles, originated from Germany. Poodles are known to be very highly intelligent among dogs, often trained to do a variety of tasks such as retrieving game, truffle hunting and circus performance.

The second half of the Yorkiepoo's parentage, the Yorkshire Terriers, originated from the English city of Yorkshire. Yorkshire Terriers were originally bred for capturing rats. Originally a dog frequently reared by the working class, Yorkshire Terriers gained popularity among the European high society, leaving it more as a companion pet than a working pet.

The Yorkiepoos, are thus the results of breeders wanting a small-sized, low shedding dog that has better resistance to genetic disorders that Yorkshire Terriers and Poodles face. However, the success has been a mixed bag. Being a hybrid breed, Yorkiepoos lacks the consistency that purebreds have when it comes to trait inheritance. As such, major bodies that officially recognizes dog breeds such as the American Kennel Club has refused Yorkiepoos the status of an official dog breed.

Even so, the Yorkiepoos' popularity continues to soar among potential dog owners during its roughly a decade long history. Currently, a majority of Yorkiepoos are first generation Yorkiepoos that comes from the classic Yorkshire Terrier / Poodle union, even though there are also some multi generation Yorkiepoos in circulation.
