yorkiepoo.gifBeing a hybrid breed, Yorkiepoos tend to be somewhat healthier than their purebred ancestors. However, that's not to say that they are invulnerable to sickness. Yorkiepoos, just like every other species, needs to be healthy to be a great companion. As such, it will be good to have some basic knowledge on what health problems might surface so that you can be better prepared for such situations.

Below are some of the common diseases that your Yorkiepoo may encounter. It will also talk about some of the indicating symptoms and what can be done to minimize the impact of these diseases.

Hip Dysplasia

Hip Dysplasia is a term used to describe the abnormal loosening of muscles, connective tissues and ligaments of your Yorkiepoo's hip joint. This abnormal development may happen in one or both of its hip joint, impeding its movement and causing chronic pain to your dog. Affected dogs may exhibit signs such as abnormal gait (gait is the pattern of movement of its limbs while in motion), limping and reluctance to stand on its hind legs, jump up or climb stairs. For treatment options, there are two paths to take - surgical or non-surgical. The surgical path can be either corrective surgery to reduce pain and increase mobility, or a complete hip replacement to replace its hip with an artificial joint. For the non-surgical path, it will involve medication, weight control and low-impact exercise among many viable options.

Legg-Calvé-Perthes Syndrome

Legg-Calvé-Perthes Syndrome (LCP) is a medical condition whereby an addition or loss of bone mass at the ball point of the hip joint, leading to deformity in hip joint and movement difficulty. Signs includes awkward hip movement, especially when it's trying to move its hind limb back or sideways, progressive lameness and inability to bear weight on one or both hind. In minor cases, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs can be used to keep it under control. In severe cases, surgery, followed by physiotherapy may be able to completely solve the problem.

Luxating Patella

Luxating Patella, is the dislocation or movement of your dog's kneecap out of its normal position. It may be caused by either blunt force trauma or a birth defect. If left untreated, its mobility can become progressively poorer. Signs includes frequent stops and cries of anguish while running and a stiff gait. For most cases, surgery is a viable option to correct this problem.

Although these are some of the more common Yorkiepoo health problems, there are also other problems not mentioned here. Thus, as responsible Yorkiepoo owners, it will be wise for you to look up on other diseases to better prepare yourself to help your pet.
